Community Chess for Adults and Advanced Scholastic Players
The Hampton Roads Chess Club—better known as HRCC—is a longstanding community chess club and core program of the Hampton Roads Chess Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
HRCC brings together adults and advanced scholastic players for casual games, rated tournaments, friendly competition, and connection with the Hampton Roads chess community. HRCC is committed to remaining a welcoming, community-based club where players can enjoy chess no matter their rating, background, or competitive goals.

Costs & Membership
Visit HRCC Free During September!
There is no HRCA membership requirement to attend HRCC during September. Whether you are a returning player, have been away for a while, or are visiting for the first time, we invite you to come play. We hope to be a space where everyone feels welcome, no matter the stage of your chess journey.
Beginning in October, regular participants are asked to join HRCA, which helps support the operating costs to run the club.
Annual membership is just $25 for the entire September–August membership year and includes valuable benefits throughout the organization.
The early bird tournament discounts alone can cover the cost of membership!

The building’s exterior doors may remain locked during club activities. Please use the Fellowship Hall doors in the back parking lot if you are late. Call HRCA at (757) 472-5909 if you need assistance entering.

Who Can Participate?
HRCC welcomes:
- Adult chess players of all ages and skill levels
- Advanced scholastic players who are ready to play independently
- Casual players looking for friendly games
- Competitive players interested in US Chess-rated events
- New visitors who want to experience the club before joining
HRCC is not designed for beginner or rookie youth players who still need instructional supervision. Families looking for youth instruction should explore HRCA’s beginner classes or Hampton Roads Scholastic Chess Club.
Casual Play and Tournament Registration
Depending on the weekly schedule, club activities may include:
- Casual chess
- US Chess-rated tournaments
- Quick and blitz events
- Club championships
- Simultaneous exhibitions
- Chess workshops and special events
- Opportunities to meet players from across Hampton Roads
Members and visitors are welcome to attend and enjoy casual chess. US Chess members may register for our weekly tournaments online — even from the parking lot! HRCC provides boards, sets, and clocks, so you do not need to bring equipment unless you prefer to use your own.
Advance online registration and payment are required for rated tournaments. Tournament directors and club staff cannot accept cash or onsite payments. This policy supports accurate participant records and HRCA’s nonprofit financial controls. Pre-registration helps us keep staff costs low, which keeps your entry fees and memberships low!

Most rated events require an active US Chess membership. Click here to join US Chess
Prize winnings must be claimed within 30 days of event end. Cash prizes are paid via Venmo, Zelle, or PayPal. If you need to claim a prize, please complete our Google Form.
